Your Consumer Secret of the Week from Gayle K. Wood
May 5 - May 11, 2008

Skip ID Theft Services

With all the dire warnings about identity theft, you might be tempted to invest in identity theft insurance or subscribe to a credit report monitoring service.

Consumer Reports says donŐt bother. These services generally arenŐt worth the money. Insurance costs up to $50 a year but provides limited coverage that rarely includes the money you lost from the crime.

Instead of paying up to $150 a year for someone else to monitor your credit report, just order an annual report from each of the three major credit bureaus. YouŐre entitled to one free report each year.

You can find more tips on protecting yourself from costly identity theft starting on page 100 of Personal Finance for Seniors.
