Mythbuster: 5 reasons to love a laptop!
Laptop computers aren’t just for the work-obsessed road warrior anymore. These handy all-in-one machines, also called notebook computers, offer benefits anyone will love.
Using a laptop means you can easily move your computer to any room in the house — even out to your deck or front porch. Most come with wireless Internet connections, Wi-Fi, so you can check your e-mail or look at online photos of the grandchildren without plugging in cords. When you travel, take along a laptop to find local restaurants or check your airline flights without having to rely on your hotel’s computer. And some airlines are now offering in-flight Wi-Fi hookup, so you can surf the Web from the friendly skies.
In the past, certain issues may have kept you from considering a laptop purchase. But just see what’s happening in today’s industry that may change your mind.
Price. Laptops used to be more expensive than desktop systems. But prices are falling. You can find some simple, sleek models for less than $500. Meanwhile, desktop prices have stayed about the same.
Battery life. You are limited by the life of your rechargeable battery if your laptop is not plugged into wall electricity. However, that’s less of a problem now that some batteries can keep you running four hours or more.
Upgrades. Greater demand has brought more laptop options, so you may find it easier to buy exactly the machine you want.
Ease of use. Smaller keyboards, dimmer screens, tricky mice — all are part of the territory with a machine that’s been shrunk. You can solve some of these problems by adding your favorite mouse, connecting a larger monitor, or plugging in to a docking station when you’re at a desk.
Size. A 16-pound computer may not seem portable to you, but you can also find models as light as 2 pounds.
