Plastic Bags Can Do What?

10 Household Tips Using Plastic Bags

Make shampooing your carpet a snap.  Don’t worry about moving your furniture into the garage when you shampoo your carpet.  Simply pull a plastic grocery bag up over each furniture leg, using a rubber band or tape to secure it firmly in place.  Move each piece only as much as necessary, then move it back into place.

Clean and easy shoe storage.  A good way to store shoes is to slip them inside zip-lock bags.  They’ll remain dust free in your closet or attic.  And if you’re packing for a trip, bring out those baggies to keep the dirt from your shoes off the other items in your suitcase.

Shape up your soup.  Freeze soup and other liquids in a plastic bag inside a coffee can.  This makes a shape that’s easier to store.  Once the food is frozen, you can remove the can and use it again.

Flatter means a faster thaw.  If you buy hamburger in bulk and freeze it in smaller portions, try this tip.  Separate it and put it into zip-lock bags.  Flatten each one evenly with a rolling pin.  Seal and freeze.  It takes less space in your freezer, stacks neatly, and thaws out more quickly.

Decorate a cake with ease.  Need a pastry bag with a decorating tip?  Make one from a zip-lock plastic bag. Spoon frosting into the bag, press out the air, then snip off a bottom corner.  Give a squeeze and decorate your cake with no fuss or muss.

Give plant lice a new ‘do.’  African violets are often attacked by little critters called plant lice.  To get rid of them, gather up your hair spray and a plastic bag.  Coat the inside of the bag with spray, then pop it over your plant and tie it shut.  Leave it on for only a day.

Silverfish take the big chill.  Get rid of silverfish and other insects that have infested your books or valuable papers.  First seal the items in a plastic bag.  Then put them in a freezer for 72 hours.

Soak your shower head.  If you have mineral deposits built up on your shower head, they can block the flow of water.  To get rid of them without taking apart your fixture, fill a plastic sandwich bag with vinegar.  Pull the bag up so that the shower head is completely immersed in the vinegar.  Use a rubber band to attach the bag.  Leave it to soak for several hours or overnight.  Remove the bag and, if necessary, use an old toothbrush and toothpicks to clean all the holes.

Save your valuables from sinking.   When you’re boating, place your valuables in a resealable,  plastic bag.  Before you close it, blow into it and fill it with air.  That way, if the bag ends up in the water, it will float.

Make your own money bags.  Handling foreign currency during your travels can be difficult, especially if you pass through several countries on your trip.  To help keep your money organized, slip some plastic sandwich bags in your purse or travel bag.  You can use them to hold the various currencies and keep them separate from each other.  If you pass through a country again on your way back, just reach for the appropriate bag.
