How to Buy Sunglasses

You probably think wearing sunglasses makes you look cool.  But sunglasses are more than a fashion statement – they’re essential for the health of your eyes.

Don’t be confused by the many styles, colors, materials, prices and advertising claims.  Consider these basics before you buy:

Sunglasses should block ultraviolet light.  Check the label to be sure the glasses cut off 99 to 100 percent of all ultraviolet light (both UV-A and UV-B). If the label says “UV absorption up to 400 nm,” that means the same thing.

Don’t worry about protection from infrared light.  Research hasn’t shown any connection between eye problems and the relatively low levels found in sunlight.

Large, wrap-around styles stop more rays.  Ordinary frames allow light to shine around the sides, over the tops, and into your eyes.  These provide protection from all angles.

Quality can vary.  Nonprescription sunglasses that are ground and polished by the manufacturer are generally of better quality.  On the other hand, those that aren’t won’t hurt your eyes.

To judge the quality of sunglasses, it helps to look at something with a rectangular pattern – perhaps floor tile.  Holding the glasses several inches from your face, cover one eye, and move the glasses from side to side and up and down.  The lines should stay straight.  If they look wavy, especially in the center, look for another pair.

Expensive doesn’t mean better.   It isn’t necessary to pay big bucks for good sunglasses.  That $100 pair may have more style, but the $10 pair could be just as good, or better, for your eyes.  Remember – UV protection is what matters most, not the price.
